Draupadi Murmu’s personal life
Draupadi Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in a Santhali tribal family in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Her father’s name was Biranchi Narayan Tudu. Her father and grandfather were village heads under the Panchayati Raj system.
Draupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu. Her husband was a banker. Unfortunately, he died in 2014. He had two sons and a daughter. After the death of her husband, both her sons also passed away.

Draupadi Murmu started her career as a school teacher before entering state politics. Murmu worked as an Assistant Professor at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur.
Draupadi Murmu’s political career
In the year 1997, Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. In 2000, she became the President of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and also served as the National Vice President of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha.
During the BJP and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, Draupadi Murmu held several positions. She held the position of Minister of State for Commerce and Transport from 6 March 2000 to 6 August 2000. On 6 August 2002, she was made Minister of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Development. She remained in this post till 16 May 2004.
In 2004 she was elected as MLA of Rairangpur Assembly Constituency. She had also worked as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation Department of the Government of Odisha. She was also awarded the Best Legislator Award by the Odisha Legislative Assembly in the year 2007 with varied administrative experience in handling various Ministries in the Government of Odisha.

Draupadi Murmu became the first woman governor of Jharkhand by taking oath as the governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015. She was the first woman tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as the governor of a state.
Draupadi Murmu, as governor of Jharkhand in 2017, refused to assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly seeking amendments to the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908 and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, 1949.
In this bill, there was a demand to give the right of tribals to commercial use of their land, as well as to ensure that the ownership of the land does not change.
Draupadi Murmu: NDA’s presidential candidate 2022
Draupadi Murmu was nominated by the BJP as the National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for the 2022 presidential election. She visited various states across the country to seek support for her candidature from BJP MPs and other opposition parties.
Draupadi Murmu also visited the northeastern states during this campaign. Odisha’s BJD, Jharkhand’s JMM Party, Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena, Uttar Pradesh’s BSP, Karnataka’s JDS and many other major opposition parties extended their support to him. Thus she became the first candidate ever to get overwhelming support from the opposition.
Draupadi Murmu won with 64.03% votes
The Returning Officer, declaring Draupadi Murmu as the 15th President of the country, said that Draupadi Murmu got 2824 first preference votes with a value of 6,76,803, while her rival Yashwant Sinha got 1,877 votes, valued at 3, Has 80,177 votes.

After Draupadi Murmu’s victory in the presidential election in 2022, then President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of State for Home Amit Shah including many other leaders and ministers wished her.
